Habiba Al Mar’ashi is the Co-founder and Chairperson of the Emirates Environmental Group (EEG), a pioneering non-governmental organisation (NGO) based in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), founded in 1991. Since then, she has played a key role in the growth of the EEG, which is an active multi-sectoral organisation, and has successfully brought the government, private sector, academia and the community under the same banner. Under her leadership, the EEG became the first environmental NGO in the world to receive an ISO 14001 certification, in 2001. The EEG is also the only organisation of its kind in the gulf region with accreditation from the United Nations Convention to Combating Desertification (UNCCD) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Governing Council. EEG is a member of the UN Global Compact and hosted its Local Network for the Gulf States from 2008 to 2015. EEG is also a member of the International Union for Conservation of Nature, since 2008. These accreditations ensure the Group’s involvement and participation in international environmental discussions, programmes and campaigns. In 2004, Habiba initiated the first corporate social responsibility (CSR) network in the arab region, as the only multi-stakeholder forum with local and multi-national entities. In addition to this, she also initiated and rolled-out the first CSR Awards for the arab world, in 2008. Habiba was the first Arab woman to become a Board Member of the UN Global Compact from 2006 to 2013. She was a Member of the Global Reporting Initiative Stakeholder Council for two terms from 2012 to 2017 (inclusive). Furthermore, she was unanimously elected as the Global NGO Representative to UNEP’s Major Groups Facilitating Committee and served from 2013 to 2015 inclusive. Apart from this, she is one of the founders of the Emirates Green Building Council and serves as the Vice Chair and Treasurer to the council. Mrs. Al Mar’ashi is also a member of the Membership Committee of the World Green Building Council. She is on the Advisory Committee of the Det Norske Veritas (DNV-GL) Certification Advisory Board for the Middle East. She is a member of the Patronage Committee of myclimate – an international climate protection organization, based in Switzerland. Mrs. Al Mar’ashi is involved in many leading initiatives on environment / sustainability, CSR, women and development at the national, regional and international levels. She is a recognised representative and spokesperson for West Asian Arab Women at high ranking international summits. David Franklin has served in architectural and planning industry capacities for architectural and construction firms, as well as for 5 years with Simon Property Group, a U.S.-based global real estate development firm. As a university faculty member both in the U.S. and UAE, Mr. Franklin has instructed courses in architecture, urban design, and construction management. As a practicing architect, Mr. Franklin has provided services for project types including retail, educational, institutional, municipal, and corporate. His work includes both LEED certified projects, and projects adhering to LEED guidelines with no certification goals. He is the 2010 Francis J. Plym Traveling Fellow in Architecture at the University of Illinois, for which he was based in France and ENSAV (the higher national school of architecture at Versailles). Mr. Franklin is currently a professor of architecture at the American University in Dubai, where his teaching specialties are ‘Professional Practice and Ethics’, ‘Life Safety and Codes’, and ‘Building Economics’. This year, he is treasurer and board member of the American Institute of Architects Middle East chapter.
